Receive FREE Training Compensation Courtesy of the Great State of Wyoming!

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

At the conclusion of one of our recent training courses, an attendee from Wyoming approached the professor with a form to sign. It was a Wyoming Workforce Development Training Fund form. The attendee informed the professor that the state of Wyoming would reimburse his training fees, up to $2,000, through a grant from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services. Essentially, the attendee was receiving free training by gaining pre-approval of the course and then providing documentation of the training fees. That seemed simple enough.

So if the state of Wyoming was providing free training fees, why wasn’t everyone taking advantage of it? Did I mention FREE training? Perhaps employees didn’t know this grant was available. Or maybe businesses weren’t informing their employees of this opportunity. Whatever the case, the Workforce Development Training Fund was established to help build a workforce of competitive and competent Wyoming workers. Training compensation is available to employees with an existing position at work who require a skill upgrade or new employees who require training in their area of work.

If you are an employed worker in the state of Wyoming this grant is for you! Below is a list of the requirements to become approved for a training grant. See if you qualify or your employer qualifies.

  • A business entity that is registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State to conduct business in Wyoming.
  • The business entity must be in good standing with the Wyoming Unemployment Insurance program, Wyoming Workers Compensation program, Wyoming Secretary of State’s office, and the Workforce Development Training Fund.
  • Training will either correct an employee’s skill deficiency or upgrade an employee’s current skill level.
  • There must be a direct relationship between the training and the trainee’s occupation or craft.
  • The training is not normally provided by the business entity.
  • The business entity will not substitute funds normally provided for training or funds obtained from another source with Business Training Grant funds.
  • There is a need for the skill upgrade provided by the training for the business entity to remain competitive in the industry or economy.
  • The skill upgrade provided by the training will enhance the business entity’s productivity or profitability, reduce employee turnover, or enhance employee wages.

Grants of up to $2,000 are renewable each fiscal year for qualified employees or businesses. You can find out more at http://soswy.state.wy.us/Rules/RULES/5535.pdf.

ASPE’s training courses have previous success of gaining grant approval. If you are a web designer interested in mastering SharePoint 2010 our SharePoint 2010 Boot Camp can help increase your worker productivity. See all of our course offerings at www.aspe-it.com which include,

Wyoming isn’t the only state to establish training grants for employees and employers. These five states also offer training compensation with similar requirements and value of compensation.

White Paper Wednesday: Security – Risks, Security Policy, and How Hackers Work

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

by Chris Knotts, PMP – ASPE Creative Director

Security is a big deal. Just this week, news broke of the Flame virus, an incredibly sophisticated espionage virus whose complexity makes it highly likely it was a product of state engineering. Although state-sponsored hacking may not be the first security concern you think of when you get to work in the morning, the reality is that every company bears risks that are closely related.

The more connected we get, the more inherent risk there is in using technology and leveraging the computing resources available to us. In the time of a younger internet, with less connectivity, these risks already existed, but in a more limited capacity. But as time has gone by, technology expertise has disseminated across more levels of global society, including areas of the world where the rule of law doesn’t play as strong of a role as it does in our own country. At the same time, network and computing tools have gotten cheaper and more approachable, enabling unscrupulous individuals and organizations to carry out cyber crime in these areas. And global connectivity means we’re vulnerable to attacks that can originate anywhere, including places where our ability to prosecute does not reach. Therefore, prevention is the best security solution available to us.

Today’s White Paper Wednesday presents four pieces covering some vital security essentials. We have some great information on top risks for individuals, top security policy components for businesses, how hackers work, and how to consider budget issues when spending money on security solutions.

These four white papers are brought to you in conjunction with Global Knowledge.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

by: Chris Knotts, PMP – ASPE Creative Director

Real-world training on SharePoint is one of ASPE’s primary specialties, and this week we’re providing some professional white papers that provide great general info as well as step-by-step SharePoint 2010 tips and checklists. We’re focusing on SharePoint 2010 this week, the main version currently used by the majority of our customer base. Even though a forthcoming release of Microsoft’s new version is starting to be a pretty hot topic, we’re leaving that alone for the moment, and focusing on practical, immediately useful white papers that will help you get the most from SharePoint 2010’s powerful collaboration resources (if you can’t help wondering about the next release, check out this blog post from ASPE-IT SharePoint expert Joe Shepley).

Web Seminar Recap: SharePoint at the Crossroads

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Microsoft is being predictably tight-lipped about specifics around the next release of SharePoint, but that doesn’t mean folks across all industries aren’t anxiously awaiting it. Today, two years after the release of 2010 and five years after the release of MOSS, dynamic document management is at an interesting crossroads.

Those of you who have SharePoint 2010 in place (particularly if your footprint is large or usage is mature) are wondering whether you should continue full-steam ahead or wait for some indication of where Microsoft is taking the product with the next release. Those of you who have older versions in place (MOSS, WSS, etc.), and are feeling the increasing pain of being a version (or more) behind, are wondering whether you should bite the bullet and upgrade to SharePoint 2010 or continue limping along to wait for the next release. And those of you who have no SharePoint in place are wondering whether you should finally dive in now (and begin reaping the benefits of using SharePoint rather than shared drives) or stick it out a little longer until the next version.

White Paper Wednesday: The Data Center: What It Is, How to Keep It Cool

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

by: Chris Knotts, PMP – ASPE Creative Director

It takes a lot of IT infrastructure to power the web, and that equipment generates a LOT of heat. This week we look at the difference between data centers and computer rooms, then we give you a great white paper on best practices for cooling.

When you surf the web, ask Siri a question on your iPhone, or get a Facebook update, somewhere your electrons are generating heat in a computer. Now multiply that activity by the billions of people, all the websites, all the cloud services, and all the apps of today’s world. That’s a lot of electrons, and that’s a lot of computing.

Do you know the difference between a computer room and a data center? Have you ever wanted to learn how the big players design cooling solutions for their data centers? Today’s white papers shed light on these topics.

What’s Next for SharePoint Cloud?

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

I’m at the end of a series of posts throwing my hat in the ring and offering my best guess at what might be next for SharePoint.

The Microsoft community has been abuzz in the last few weeks as we seem to be nearing some tangible news about what the next version of SharePoint will look like—needless to say, speculation about what the folks in Redmond might be planning (or not planning) for SharePoint 2013 is running rampant.

With the next release, there are some opportunity areas for SharePoint—and where Microsoft decides to go will have critical implications for current and future SharePoint customers:

  1. Will SharePoint’s records management capabilities finally be ready for prime time?
  2. Will SharePoint offer fully-functioning integration with capture technology?
  3. Will SharePoint provide more robust workflow capabilities to go beyond basic document-centric processes?
  4. Will SharePoint evolve into a true social business tool?
  5. Will SharePoint 365 overcome the limitations of BPOS?
